NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) – Cries to close Rikers Island are growing. The songs of freedom turned into a full on assault of the notorious jail Sunday outside Gracie Mansion. Leaders demanded Mayor Bill de Blasio close the notorious jail marked by violence and corruption.
On Monday, New York City’s jail chief, Joseph Ponte, surprised the City Council by announcing that the plan to build a new 1,500-bed jail on Rikers Island, first reported by the Voice in October, had been placed on hold.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City reached a $5.7 million settlement with the family of Bradley Ballard, a mentally ill Rikers Island inmate who died in 2013 after being locked in his cell for six days without care or medication.
At the foot of the bridge to Rikers Island in New York this past Saturday, Akeem Browder turned his back on the crowd he was speaking to and addressed the many police officers that were standing guard.
Nearly 1,000 protesters demanded the closing of Rikers Island during a march through Astoria on their way to a rally at the base of the bridge to the notorious prison complex. Glenn E. Martin, founder and president of JustLeadershipUSA, which organized the event that drew celebrity speakers such as Russell Simmons and John Legend and a host of former prisoners, advocates and elected officials, marvelled at the turnout.
